Dear Maria; Part Three.

“Darling, your cheeks are flushed. What’s the matter?” Selena asked me.
“Oh, it’s nothing. My cheeks are always flushed like that. It’s weird,” I lied.

Sure, Jonathan was cute, but still I needed to snap myself out of it. He had a girlfriend! HELLO! But, then again, Selena said they were on and off. I could do some damage. NO. No, Maria. Stop.
I couldn’t get my mind to stop in time, and before I knew it, the hottie himself, was standing in front of me, “Ready for Music Ed?”
Ah, that smile. If I were on my deathbed, that would have to be the last thing I’d want to see. It was so beautiful. I shook myself out of my thoughts to smile and reply, “Yeah, we didn’t have homework last night right?”
Jonathan shook his head as the warning bell rang.

“Bye Maria! I’ll see you at your locker at the end of the day. And Jonathan, don’t hit on her, kay?” Selena teased with a huge smile.
“Ha ha, funny. Okay, see ya.” Jonathan replied, and I just shot her a glare and a small smile.

There were a few moments of silence until he, of course, broke it, “So how is your second day going for you, Maria?”
I looked at him, seeing that he was really interested if my day was going okay, “It’s been okay so far. Nothing horrible, but nothing amazing….”
I smiled without really knowing it, and he smiled back, “So have you seen any guys you like, yet? This school is filled with gawking, hormone-filled teenage boys. I’m sure you’ve spotted one already.”
He laughed and I replied, “Nah, not really. Guys at this school really aren’t my type.”
“Oh really? And what might your type be exactly? …just out of pure curiosity.” He said a bit too softly.
“Hmm,.. tall, dark and handsome,” I teased.
He laughed, “Yeah I figured. Typical girl. Well, not typical obviously. All the girls here in this school, on their first or second day, already picked out someone they liked, so you’re definitely different.”
“In a good way,” He said quickly, in case I was offended.
I smiled, “Yeah. So what about you? Selena says you have a girlfriend, but then you don’t?”
Hey, I could ask questions, too. He asked me some, so it was only fair that I, in return, got to ask some questions of my own.
His face turned from slightly happy to pure hatred, “Selena tells everyone that. The girl I’m always around is my step cousin. I’m not into her. Selena just likes making it harder for me to get an actual girlfriend. So she tells every girl that I’m taken…”
“Oh, that’s weird. Why does she do that? Weird..” I said, trying to sound sincere.
He shrugged, “I don’t know. It might be because she’s just jealous? We tried dating a while back, but I just didn’t like her like that.”
“And I’m guessing she was the one hurt?” I half guessed, half asked.
He nodded, “Yeah.”
“Ah, yeah, that makes sense now. Well, hey, having girls around you all the time isn’t that great. If I had a bunch of boys around me, I think I’d end up killing them one by one,” I tried to cheer him up.
He laughed, “Do I smell a criminal among us?”
I smirked, “No, you just see one.”
He flashed his pearly whites again, sending butterflies into my stomach. Wonderful.
We then continued small talk, as we walked into our only class together. We made it just on time and had a few more seconds to spare.
“Maria,” the teacher called out, “Jonathan, can I talk to you both?”
Weird.
“Yeah, sure,” I said, walking closer to the teachers desk in front of the room.
“What’s up?” Jonathan asked him.
“It has occurred to me that you both are without partners. James has transferred to a later class, so Jonathan that leaves you without a partner now. And Maria, since you’ve just joined our class, you stand alone. Would you two like to be partners, or work solo? It’s up to you. I just figured I’d ask the both of you to see what you two might prefer.” Mr. Mahten stated.
I looked at Jonathan, who looked slightly pleased with this situation. I shrugged my shoulders, “Sure. I wouldn’t mind working with Jonathan.”
He smiled at me and nodded, “As would I.”
“Okay, good. You two can choose to sit at either empty tables,” The teacher smiled and Jonathan turned to me.
“Thanks,” I muttered as we started to walk away from him.
As soon as we were out of hearing range for the teacher I said, “Let’s sit at your desk. It’s further back, and Mr. Mahten just scares the hell out of me.”
He laughed, “He does that to everyone. And yeah, we can pass notes easier back at my table.”
He winked and I laughed at him, “Funny. Okay, I’ll just go get my things and be at the table in a quick sec.”

Jonathan then walked back to his table. To my surprise the table behind his was empty, so we’d have no problem with anything.
I smiled on the inside and imagined how exactly this friendship would work out. Sure, he was an amazing guy, and yet a good friend. Maybe this school transfer was the best thing yet.
Mr. Mahten started the day off by handing out a worksheet for everyone. Jonathan wasn’t lying about passing notes. We continued to learn about one another very quickly through our notes; he started the writing conversation first.

So, what’s your favorite day of the week and why?

Hm, Thursday. Because it’s the day before Friday :P you?

Saturday, because it’s my only day I get to relax. I help out at my uncle’s restaurant on most days. But Saturday is my only day off without school being involved haha.

Ooh, that’s interesting. What’s his restaurant called? I’ll have to go there sometime and bug the hell outta you.

HA, bug me? I don’t think you’d ever be capable of doing that. You’re just so cheery and your mood has this amazing affect on others. But it’s called Joe’s. You know, the one on Cotton Street?
Seriously!? My friends and I used to go there all the time… until that thing happened. You know, when there was that gang fight or whatever. Since then my mother hasn’t allowed me to go really anywhere with friends. It sucks.

Ahh, yeah. That fight ended badly. Three people needed stitches and A LOT of those city kids went to court. I don’t know exactly what went on, but it had to do with gangs, definitely.
Yeaaahhhh. Let’s just say that I was with the wrong friends, at the wrong time. I’m lucky I wasn’t one of those kids who got hurt OR went to court. I was innocent, so the cops let me go.
Really? Hm, never thought of you hanging around gangs. Haha, you’re surprising me every second. Let me just get something clear: do you sell drugs too? Ahaha.

I can promise you. I do NOT sell drugs lmao. How could you even ask such a thing? Do I look like a drug dealer? Haha
No, you don’t. But hey! With you, anything could be possible. :]

Lovely. I’m a bookworm. Surprising?
No, not really. What kinda books do you like escaping reality with? Haha

I’m a girl. Isn’t that answer obvious?

Romance. Anything other than that though? Jw.

Hm, I like adventure books. And oooh, books about the supernatural.
…..like vampires?

…..yes :]

DUDE! That’s awesome. A girl who likes reading vampire books? Wow. I think I’m gonna play the lottery today. Haha.
Lol, so you’re gonna play the lottery because you found a girl that likes reading vampire books? You’re strange Jonny.
That’s a different way to spell that nickname. I like it. But have you ever read Vampire Kisses Series?
Jonny has a ring to it. It might stick, it might not. But then again I don’t know how it would sound. Writing something and saying it is totally different. And I finished reading that series a few months ago. It was great.
Then we’ll have to try it out once this class is over and we’re allowed to continue our conversation in the form of words. And yeah, it was. How about Twilight? Ever read that series?
Uhm, I think I’ve heard about it. Is the girl’s name something like Bella or Betty or something like that?
Haha, Bella, yes. You should start reading it. There are three books out, the last one comes out in a few months. I’m dying to get my hands on it actually.
I heard it was a GIRLY vampire story. Love story and all that. You a mushy kinda guy, Jonny? Haha. And if you convince me better, I might just give it a try.
Oh yes. Mushy. That’s DEFINITELY what’s going on with me. Haha, no. My one friend got me into it; she said it changed her life. So I figured why not. And how about if I take you out on a date? Then will you try reading it?

WHAT?! I couldn’t feel my lungs. I was caught completely off guard. Thankfully, Mr. Mahten started going around and checking out how each table was doing with the worksheet. Apparently, he only gave us worksheets for the entire class. Jonathan quickly hid the paper that we were conversing on. I just shot a confused look at Jonathan, and handed my completed worksheet to the teacher as he passed our table. I’ve been done for a while now, and so has Jonathan. But we both made it look like we had just finished. Very good acting. After Mr. Mahten walked to the table in front of us, Jonathan leaned closer to me, as if to whisper something to me.
“You okay?” He whispered quietly, careful not to allow the teacher to hear.
I nodded my head.
“Oh, okay. Then what’s up with your face? You look so shocked..”

I leaned closer to his ear, “Because YOU shocked me,”

He furrowed his eyebrows, “Really? How?”
I begged for the sheet of paper back to write down my words instead of begging to get in trouble by speaking them.

You asked me out.
Yeah, so?

Are you serious?

As a heart attack. Why?

Well let’s just say that guys don’t normally ask me out on dates often.
Psh, their loss. They’re stupid not to.
Haha, funny. Could we do it as friends though? I mean, you’re a real nice guy, but I just wanna take things slowly at first. I’m still new here :P
Sure, yeah. I wasn’t asking you to be my girlfriend or something like that. Plus I was half kidding. I didn’t expect you to take it so seriously haha. But yeah, definitely as just friends. I’d want to get to know you more before doing anything as well. :]

Okay, great. When and where? (: It would be nice to get out of the house for once. Hopefully I can convince my mom that you’re far from dangerous.
Dangerous? Oh please. My middle name is Danger. Haha, uhm. How does Saturday sound? We could catch an early ish movie? Then I could bring you to the bookstore and pick up a copy of Twilight?

Mm, Saturday sounds pretty good actually. But isn’t that your only day for relaxing? I don’t want to take that away from you…
Haha if anything you’ll make it more interesting. Plus I’d rather do something with someone as cool as you instead of laying around the house. So Saturday?
Okaayy, it’s a date.

Just then the bell rang, notifying everyone that the day was finally over. Jonathan crumpled up the piece of paper that we were writing on.
“That class was interesting,” He smiled on our way out into the hallway.
“Tell me about it, haha. So what movie are we gonna see?” I asked, eager to hear his plans.
“Hm, comedy romance sound good?” He joked.
“Ha ha. Funny. We could watch that new action movie?” I suggested, partly for his sake.
I wasn’t going to make him watch a girly movie.
“Oh, you mean that Will Smith movie?” He asked.
I nodded my head, “Yeah, It seemed pretty interesting.”
“Yeaaahh. Let’s go see Juno.” He smiled.
My mouth japed open, “Seriously!?”

He nodded, “Seemed pretty interesting.”
I smiled, “Okay, I’m not picky. Juno it is.”
He smiled back, “Sounds great. I’ll pick you up?”
“That’d be a great idea, seeing as I can’t drive by myself completely. I get my license in August, if my mother decides to be nice.” I said sadly.
“Mom’s that much of a bitch, huh? My mom is the same way. She’s saying how she doesn’t trust me with driving. But I convinced my dad to change her mind. But yeah, here’s my number. Call me later on and we’ll work out the arrangements,” He winked and pulled out a marker from his pocket.
“You carry a blue sharpie everywhere with you?” I asked in shock as I pulled my sharpie out of my pants pocket as well.
His eyes got wide, “No way! Haha, wow. How ironic. But yeah, here,” He said, grabbing my hand that was holding the sharpie since my other books were holding my books to my chest.
It tickled a bit while he wrote his number on the back of my hand. I smiled at him after he was done.
“Okay, I’ll try to steal the phone from my mother later on today if she’s not on the phone with one of her many boyfriends,” I laughed, trying to make it sound like a joke rather than it being the truth.
“Haha, you’re funny. And okay. I’ll see you around. My locker is this way,” He pointed to the direction behind us as we were nearing my locker.
“Oh, you didn’t have to walk me all the way here… Now you’re gonna be late for you bus-“ He cut me off.
“I drive. Remember?” he smiled, “Plus, I thought you’d like it if someone walked with you to keep you company. I’ll talk to you later?”
I smiled, “Definitely, see ya.”
He smiled and turned around just in time to avoid Selena’s loud greeting.
“MARIA! Hi! Sooooo…?” she questioned.
“Hey Selena. What?” I asked, confused.
She smiled, “I’m not blind. Jonathan was flirting with you. Tell me about everything!”
I sighed quietly, “Nothing much. We just talked a lot during Music Ed, and we’re gonna go catch a movie on Saturday.”
Her eyes popped open, “WHAT?! Maria, he has a girlfriend…”
I shook my head, “He said that’s his cousin. Er, step-cousin.”
“Oh… Okay. So, what movie are you guys gonna go see?” She changed the topic fast.
“Juno,” I smiled.
She laughed, “He’s such a pansy. So Jonathan. You excited?”
I smiled widely as if that wasn’t a good enough answer.
“Thought so,” She said.
How did things change so drastically for me?
I didn’t know how to explain it, but I was definitely not going to complain. This is just amazing.
I hope this feeling never goes away. But something else was in store for me when I got home.
And it was far from peaceful, little did I know.

I hope you enjoyed it! :)
